Staining wood surfaces are always at the mercy of the weather. The wood on your fence or deck needs to be under a certain moisture percentage to guarantee the results of the product. Drier months, it is easier to get a project done in just a few days while some jobs may take weeks to finish based off wet (and sometimes windy) weather.

It depends! If you have just had a fence or deck built, there is a drying period that needs to take place (as the wood that was used to build your fence or deck has been treated and that needs to dry). This can take anywhere from 2 to 3 months.
This would be a great time to get on the schedule before any organic growth starts to get into the wood and much cheaper.
However, if you have a fence or deck that has been left to weather for longer than 6-8 months it would be worth cleaning to ensure any organic growth is gone.
